Strategy games actually work on phones now
For a long time, strategy games on phones felt like compromises. The interfaces were cramped, the controls fiddly, and anything deep seemed to demand a mouse. That's changed, and it's one of my favorite shifts in mobile gaming.
The breakthrough was designers accepting the touchscreen instead of fighting it. Dragging units, tapping to inspect, pinching to zoom. When a game is built around these motions from the start rather than ported onto them, it just works.
Iron Tide Command is a recent one that got this right. Its fleet management could have been a nightmare of tiny buttons, but instead it's genuinely pleasant to navigate. That's not luck, it's careful design.
If you've avoided mobile strategy because of bad memories, I'd encourage you to try again. The turn-based ones especially suit the format, since you can think at your own pace and put the phone down mid-decision.
Just check that the game has clear tooltips and readable text before you commit. Depth means nothing if you can't see what you're doing.
